How I Do Cold Outreach: Don’t Fear the Cold

Some of my greatest successes have come from cold outreach.

In 2018, a cold email of mine to a crypto YouTuber resulted in our launch making $500,000 in profit in its first 48 hours.

But as anybody who’s ever tried cold outreach knows, it’s very hard:

  • Business emails receive too much spam. Your messages aren’t seen/opened.
  • Even if the email is opened, given the volume of cold messages the average influential person gets, there’s a high chance your recipient won’t read past the first sentence or two.
  • If you try cold calling – people don’t answer calls from numbers they don’t recognize.

Sometimes you get lucky – a person isn’t as deluged as you think, you write a captivating subject and body, and your offer resonates. But most of the time, you face the above issues.

Well – I can’t promise this hack will make your offer more appealing, but I can promise it’ll make it easier to reach people cold.

The hack

This tool – Lusha – is a Chrome extension to get many people’s phone numbers and emails from LinkedIn.

Lusha’s the best I’ve tried, though there are many good others, such as RocketReach.

Once you have the number, try opening it on WhatsApp instead of just calling or texting.

Many people have WhatsApp, and they connect their personal numbers to it.

At this point, you can text somebody, and there is a very high chance they will read your message.

You can also go the extra mile and send a personalized video message (I wouldn’t recommend a cold voice message).

I’ve used this to pitch CEOs of major companies, journalists, and famous people.

You can also use Lusha and tools like it to get people’s emails even when they’re not readily available.

But the point is to message people in a place where they’re more likely to notice and in a way where they’re more likely to pay attention.

I think video messages, or even texts, to a WhatsApp number work very well.

What’s your experience with cold outreach? What have you found to work and not work?
